Billy Bates and Todd Huntley successfully defended two general surgeons in a wrongful death case tried in the Bessemer Division of Jefferson County, Alabama. The jury’s defense verdict was returned on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 after a seven day trial. The case arose out of allegations that the two surgeons improperly cared for the decedent who suffered blunt force trauma to her chest after an ATV accident. The claims were that the first surgeon failed to place a thoracoscopy tube while the second surgeon failed to perform a thoracotomy in a timely manner. After hearing testimony from thirteen witnesses and closing arguments, the jury found the two surgeons were not responsible for the death of their patient.
